SUBMISSIONS FOR THE 2026-2027 ESSAY COMPETITION ARE OPEN NOW!!

This year, we are once again inviting high school students — and younger students who feel up to the challenge — to consider entering the YPI Essay Competition. Submissions open on October 6th via Google Form, and will be due on December 18th, 11:59PM.

The YPI Essay Competition is an opportunity for students with a strong passion for policy-making and global affairs to research an issue they care about and propose a real solution. For this year's prompt, we ask that you: Pick a country, identify a major issue it faces — whether domestic or global — and propose a comprehensive policy solution to address it.

Successful Essays Should:

  1. Pick a specific issue and describe it in detail (not just “the economy”)

  2. Ground your proposal in real data and case studies

  3. Ensure you propose feasible policy solutions, and address elements like funding, implementation challenges and political will

  4. Mention alternative strategies, and explain why your proposed solution is superior

  5. Consider potential drawbacks to your strategy and how they can be overcome

  6. Cite credible, verified sources (avoiding any AI use)

Essays should be 850-1200 words, formatted in Times New Roman, 12-point font, following MLA style, and include at least 8 citations. There is a $15 entry fee to submit.

All submissions will be judged by Yale undergraduates based on the criteria above, and winners will be announced in mid-January. The top three entries will receive certificates and Yale memorabilia, and winning essays may be published.

We hope you take the time to consider this opportunity, and we look forward to reading your submissions! Thank you!
